Schools across America often struggle to keep up with the way kids are being dismissed. This can lead to overcrowded carpool lines and dreaded pick-up time in the front office. Without streamlined operations, it’s no wonder that many schools struggle with dismissal processes.

There are a variety of different ways to release students, but schools need to properly document the method(s) used. This process can be complicated since most schools are still using the same technology they used in the 90s.

It’s not just families, teachers, and school staff that get stressed out from unorganized school dismissal! Students’ mental health can also suffer from the stress and worry of how they’ll get home at the end of each day. These are just a few of the top concerns and safety issues caused by poorly designed dismissal processes. But it doesn’t have to be all doom and gloom when it comes to sending kids home at the end of the school day. Here are just a few ways you can improve your school’s safety.

Steps to Improve School Safety for Dismissal

Every school has different needs and therefore different processes, but the following steps are sure to get your school’s dismissal operations on the right track.

1. Ask for Feedback

Start by asking for feedback on your current dismissal process from school staff and parents. What’s great and what could be improved? 

You can use this feedback to design a new and improved process. And because staff and parents felt a part of improving your process, you’re more likely to get buy-in for the upcoming changes. 

2. Get Accurate Attendance Reports

Avoid dismissal chaos from the start by getting an accurate roster of students each day. 

Create a process (or leverage technology) for teachers to keep track of which students are present each day. This process should also account for how teachers can update records for kids that leave school early.

By having an accurate record of students at the end of the day, you can ensure every kid on campus that day gets home safely.
